Easter Eggs

I've never colored Easter Eggs ever before in my life. Which is why I naturally became obsessed with doing so this Easter weekend. We did celebrate Easter when I was a girl. My mom made a production of the popular religious holidays and there was a nice spread for Easter which included these large beautifully painted eggs with elaborated scenes on them which when opened would have little yellow furry chicks. She also gave my brother and I stuffed bunny rabbits, one white and one brown. There was a lot of fake straw stuffing and other elements I can't recall but no Easter Egg hunt and no dyed eggs naturally, because we were vegan.

I still don't eat eggs themselves and never buy them but I guess I can thank Pinterest with their endless crafty tutorial links for making me want to try. That and the fact that as an egg deprived child, I began to project very romantic notions on the egg.

I remember seeing a commercial for eggs when I was a girl on on vacation with my family in Florida. "The incredible edible egg" was the jingle. Very simple. It was the time of Pan Am and elevator musak. And I remember it with fondness and appropriately deluded nostalgia.

I am as equally grossed out by the contents of eggs (that being an aborted chicken) as I am fascinated with their seemingly perfect shape and the way they feel in the hand. And then of course there is the obvious appeal, that the egg is something about to be born, something hibernating and waiting to hatch. This relates to Spring and the story of Jesus' rising in a very poetic way, perfect for commercialization.

But I really love Spring and I really love shapes and as my friend Paula said today, "I live for color." So this was a fun project for me to do among other things this long Easter weekend.
