When I got home after work on Friday there was a flyer stuck to the front door of my building advertising a free performance by the Dance Theater of Harlem at the amphitheater in Marcus Garvey Park at 6:00. I checked the time on my phone. It was 5:53. I ran up to my apt, kissed my sweetie changed into a halter dress, grabbed my camera, ran back downstair and walked across the street. Yes, I live across from Marcus Garvey Park. LOL!!
I love it!!
Anyway, the show started somewhere around 6:18 and it was absolutely amazing from beginning to end. Tanya Wright was the MC along with two or three others, two of whom were choreographers. The first half was traditional and then conceptual and for the finale they danced to James Brown and Aretha Franklin! OH MAN! They had us moving and finger popping and dancing in our seats at the end. It was amazing, and moving and just an honor to watch.
Dance always gives me the feeling, when it's done well that is very close to what I feel listening to instrumental music or any other non verbal forms of expression, a kind of communication that it is divine, innocent and devoid of pretense, incapable of it, in fact. It touches me in a place I don't think anyone knows exist. Maybe I don't even know it exists, until something appears there. And then I remember.
